Things everyone knows that are not so

Last updated August 13, 2026

We started Virgin Myth in 2022 for a simple reason: the writing we wanted to read about science myths, history myths, food myths mostly did not exist, and what did exist was selling something.

The tone we aim for is curious, rigorous, delighted rather than smug when something is debunked — we assume you are intelligent, busy, and able to tell when you are being flattered.

What we cover

The site is organised into 6 sections:

  • Science Myths — Physics, biology and space, as taught wrongly in a hundred classrooms.
  • History Myths — Events that did not happen the way the story goes, and who improved them.
  • Food Myths — Kitchen lore that survives because nobody tested it.
  • Money Myths — Received wisdom about earning, saving and spending that does not hold.
  • Language & Origins — Word origins, invented etymologies and rules that were never rules.
  • Everyday Misconceptions — Animals, weather, machines — the small wrong things almost everyone believes.

Who writes it

Every article carries a named writer with a profile page, and nothing is published anonymously. You can see the full list on our writers page.

How it is funded

Advertising pays for this site. It does not buy coverage, placement or a favourable word, and our editorial policy sets out exactly how that separation works.

Who publishes it

Virgin Myth is published by Second Look Publishing, a sole proprietorship of Deepika Rao.

Corrections

We correct errors of fact promptly and visibly. If you spot one, tell us — see the corrections section of our editorial policy for what happens next.
